26/02/2008 - £390,000 Platinum win for Didcot mum
A Didcot woman, who will be 65 next month, won herself a magnificent early birthday present of £390,000 on the National Bingo Game’s Platinum Jackpot play-off.
“I have had ill-health and a rough time in the last couple of years but now this has really changed my luck,” she said, still in shock after Sunday’s excitement at the Coronet Club in The Broadway in Didcot.
The winner, who has asked not to be named, lives not far from the Coronet, which she joined when it opened in 1981. She plays there at least twice a week and her previous biggest win was £200 some time ago.
Club owner, John Carpenter said; “It couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. And there was such an amazing buzz in the club when we announced how much she had won. A customer said to me as she left that it was really nice to have been a part of it. That’s the difference between playing
the Lottery or bingo online, rather than in a club.”
“The woman’s husband doesn’t play but walks to meet her from the club. “A passer-by said to me, are you smiling, you will be in a minute,” he said. “John was at the door when I got there and told me I had better come in. What a shock it all was. My wife was shaking like a leaf all that night and we couldn’t sleep at all. We have not come down to earth yet.”
The couple, who have been married for 42 years, have a son and grandson. Her husband works in manufacturing and was due to retire in two years time. But following his wife’s massive win, he says he plans to give up work now.
Their first thoughts on spending the money are to have a new kitchen, a ‘new set of wheels,’ and replace their garage door.
The winner’s prize-money, totalling £391,868, was made up of the Platinum Jackpot prize of £350,104, the Sunday evening National Game prize of £40,000, the Zone prize of £1,664 and the Club/house prize of £100.
The Platinum prize that evening was £700,208, but she had to share with a player at the Beacon in Cricklewood, who also completed a full house in 41 numbers, the lowest call in any of the 470 clubs playing nationwide.
The Coronet Club in The Broadway, Didcot: has been run for the past thirty years by three generations of the Carpenter family, Norma, her son John and his son, Laurie.
Next Platinum Jackpot play–off will be on Sunday 30 March.
